Hair Restoration, Done in the Right Order

Start with the reason, not the remedy

Diagnosis first. Then treatment. It sounds obvious — and almost nobody in hair restoration works this way.

PROGEN™ Trichology is a physician-supervised hair regeneration practice serving Austin, Texas, under our Medical Director, Dr. Marcial Oquendo, MD. We treat hair loss the way medicine treats everything else that matters: identify the condition, then match the care to it.

Walk into most hair clinics and the conversation starts with a product — a package, a procedure, a program. Walk into PROGEN and the conversation starts with a question: why is this happening to you?

Because “hair loss” isn’t one condition. It’s a symptom shared by several very different ones:

### The conditions we evaluate

Androgenetic alopecia (pattern thinning). The most common form in men and women — gradual, hereditary, hormone-mediated, and progressive. In men: recession and crown thinning. In women: a widening part and diffuse volume loss. Progressive doesn’t mean hopeless; it means timing matters.

Telogen effluvium. Sudden, diffuse shedding — often two to four months after a trigger like illness, surgery, childbirth, rapid weight change, or intense stress. Frequently temporary, sometimes persistent, and commonly mistaken for pattern loss (and treated wrongly because of it).

Alopecia areata. Patchy, well-defined loss driven by an autoimmune process. Needs careful assessment and honest guidance — including, where appropriate, coordination with dermatology.

Traction alopecia. Loss along tension lines from tight styling — braids, extensions, tight ponytails. Caught early, the follicles often recover; caught late, the loss can become permanent. Early evaluation is everything.

Cicatricial (scarring) alopecia. A group of conditions where inflammation replaces follicles with scar tissue. These need prompt, accurate identification — and honesty about what regeneration can and cannot do once scarring exists.

Different mechanisms, different urgency, different treatments. This is why your first appointment is an evaluation, not a sales meeting.

Why diagnosis comes first

Not all hair loss is the same.

Androgenetic alopecia, telogen effluvium, alopecia areata, traction alopecia and cicatricial (scarring) alopecia are different conditions. They progress differently and respond to different treatments — which is why a generic serum, laser cap or one-size protocol so often disappoints.
Every ProGen plan begins with a detailed scalp analysis and a real diagnosis, reviewed by our Medical Director. Only then do we recommend a protocol built for your scalp and your biology.

What causes hair loss

Genetics, hormones, and more.

Most hair loss traces to a handful of drivers — often several at once. The most common is androgenetic (pattern) hair loss, driven by genetics and the hormone DHT (dihydrotestosterone), which gradually miniaturizes follicles until hairs grow finer and shorter.
Other common causes include hormonal shifts (postpartum, perimenopause, thyroid), physical or emotional stress that triggers sudden shedding, autoimmune activity, tension from tight hairstyles, and nutritional factors like low ferritin (iron). Because the cause changes the treatment, identifying yours is the whole point of a diagnosis.
Conditions we evaluate

A precise diagnosis for every pattern.

If you’ve tried products, PRP or medications without the result you hoped for, there is a reason — and we can help you find it.
Non-surgical treatment options

Matched to your diagnosis.

Once your diagnosis is clear, your plan is built from these — individually or in combination:

PROGEN™ Revive — Microfocused Ultrasound. Our patented flagship: focused ultrasound energy delivered at three calibrated depths (1.5mm, 3.0mm, 4.5mm) to stimulate the follicular environment. Non-invasive — no needles, no incisions, no downtime. About microfocused ultrasound →

PRP Therapy. Growth factors concentrated from your own blood, prepared and administered under medical supervision — recommended only when the diagnosis supports it. About PRP therapy →

Red Light Therapy (Photobiomodulation). Clinically studied wavelengths of light supporting follicular energy metabolism. Painless, non-invasive, and often layered with other protocols. About red light therapy →

Bioactive Peptides. Targeted peptide support integrated into plans where the diagnosis calls for it. About bioactive peptides →

Also at PROGEN: Ultherapy® Prime — non-surgical lifting for face, neck, and décolleté, on the newest Ultherapy platform. Different goal, same standard of physician-supervised care. About Ultherapy® Prime →

Every plan comes with realistic timelines and transparent pricing. Individual results vary — which is exactly why nothing here is one-size-fits-all.

Physician-supervised care

Led by our Medical Director.

Hair loss is medical, so your care should be too. Every ProGen diagnosis and protocol is reviewed and supervised by our Medical Director, Dr. Marcial Oquendo, MD, alongside a specialized trichology team.
That means your plan is grounded in a real clinical evaluation — not a product upsell — and adjusted over time based on how you actually respond.
For the patient who has "a

For the patient who has "already tried everything"

Minoxidil that did little. Supplements by the drawerful. Maybe PRP at a med spa, sold by the session with no diagnosis behind it. If that’s your story, you’re our most common patient — and your experience isn’t proof that nothing works. It’s proof that untargeted treatment doesn’t work. An evaluation tells you, often in a single visit, whether the approaches you tried were ever aimed at your actual condition.

Why surgery isn't where we

Why surgery isn't where we start

Hair transplantation is real medicine with real results — for the right candidate, at the right stage, with realistic expectations. But it’s surgery: incisions or extractions, recovery, cost, and permanence. We believe it belongs at the end of the decision tree, not the beginning. PROGEN exists for everyone who wants to know what’s possible before that step — and if your evaluation shows surgical consultation genuinely fits your goals, we’ll tell you so plainly. That honesty is the product.

Common questions

Frequently asked.

The one matched to your diagnosis. Pattern thinning, post-stress shedding, autoimmune patches, and tension-related loss all respond to different care — which is why “best” only means something after an evaluation.

Non-surgical protocols can be effective when they’re matched to the right condition at the right stage — and disappointing when they’re not. Candidacy is what the evaluation determines. Individual results vary.

Diagnosis and supervision. A stand-alone PRP session without an evaluation is a guess. Here, PRP is one tool inside a physician-supervised plan built on your findings.

Yes — women’s hair loss, including postpartum shedding, perimenopausal changes, traction alopecia, and female-pattern thinning, is central to this practice, not an afterthought.

Sooner beats later, in almost every condition we see. Early-stage loss has the most options; some conditions (traction, scarring types) become harder to reverse with time.

Plans are priced to the diagnosis. After your evaluation you’ll see every option and cost in writing — before you decide anything.
